Seahouses, or to give it its formal title, North Sunderland Harbour, as it is shown on all charts, is managed by the North Sunderland Harbour Commissioners. The name Seahouses, is thought to have come from the term the “Sea Houses”, which sprang up with the growth of the fishing industry around 1900, while the village of North Sunderland is about a mile inland, and had agricultural and small scale mining origins. Seahouses as it is more popularly known, is a busy holiday destination, with a thriving tourist industry supporting boat trips, hotels and pubs, B & B’s, cafes and of course the famous Fish & Chip shops and restaurants, now supplemented by 2 Indian restaurants and a Chinese take away shop.

The Harbour Master, Captain Philip Brabban, is usually on hand in the Harbour Office to answer any queries, and the Club tries to ensure that we enjoy an amicable working relationship. Every effort must be made to ensure that we do not hinder the commercial traffic using the harbour,  and while we can use pier moorings in the outer or “New” harbour, this is a temporary provision for us. Mooring ropes must not be left tied to bollards as if to reserve a place on the pier, and boats must not obstruct the fuel tank or lifting davits (cranes) used by the fishing craft to unload their catch. So a few simple rules, ensure we avoid any problems with the commercial traffic in the harbour. The Inner Harbour is for commercial vessels only, unless there is severe weather when the Harbour Master’s permission must be sought, for a leisure craft to take refuge !

The Harbour Office can be contacted on 01665 720033 during office hours. NB The Harbour is protected by an extensive CCTV Network.

Harbour VHF Radio Channel - Ch 8 - NB There is not a fixed listening watch kept on this channel, so its a case of giving them a call to see if the office is manned. In an emergency use Channel 16 and call HUMBER COASTGUARD.

A Photo Slideshow shows the origin old Harbour Office, demolished (2006 ?) to make way for today’s modern office, which can be seen on the last slide. The new building houses a meeting room, computer and Harbour CCTV controls, as well as the Harbour Office and Radio.
